Things to remember for new developers
Posted On Nov 11, 2018
I was recently asked to attend a 3rd year BSC class’ year-project presentation. I was there to be the voice of the real world; someone who actually writes code in anger every day. My role was to watch the presentations, and give some feedback on any issues I saw. As I was watching the presentations, I came up with a list of things / issues/ areas that I thought the students should be aware of, or focus on next. I figured that list would make a good series of blog posts as well.
This post is just to introduce the idea, and get the list down. Each of the items listed below will become a short blog post of its own as I get to them. I promise I’ll get to them:
- Privacy and Personal Information – GDPR and POPIA
- Security – password hashing
- UX – data-first design vs user-first design
- Databases and scaling an application to multiple terminals
- More UX – waiting states and loading daisies
- Solved problems and not re-inventing the wheel
- Simple is good
- Input validation
- Tips and tricks for doing demonstrations
- Using the latest tech.
- Online courses and continuous learning
